New Moon in Leo 2024

This active new moon is key for setting our goals in motion

astrology new moon Leo
New Moon in Leo begins August 4th 2024

On August 4th, we have our new moon in Leo, peaking on August 5th. This moon is well aspected with Jupiter and Mars in Gemini which are in a 5 degree conjunction and are approaching an exact conjunction on August 14th. Mercury goes retrograde hours after the new moon begins late Sunday night and Venus too is in motion, beginning this new moon in the 29th degree of Leo before switching signs on August 5th where it joins Mercury in the sign of Virgo. The north node in Aries is trine the new moon in Leo which is aligning us with our destiny and adding an element of fate.

New Moon in Leo, the Ruler Archetype

Leo is the star on the zodiac. Ruled by the sun, its archetype is that of the ruler, the celebrity and the performer. Leo is heart led in all things, they are an open book operating with a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of refreshing authenticity that can inspire or intimidate. Leos are meant to shine; that's the core essence of this zodiac and it is at the heart of what it is they are meant to experience and do here on earth, which is be the fullest and most authentic expression of themselves. This paves a way for the rest of the zodiac to follow suit. Leos are full of talent and they are meant to share those gifts. This is an archetype that holds an intense level of visibility so when we encounter Leo themes or energy we are confronted with our own relationship with visibility and our feelings towards being seen. The new moon in Leo is pushing us into deeper levels of authentic self expression and leadership. It’s asking us to take up space and allow ourselves to be witnessed as we truly are, in all of our impressiveness and magnitude.

New Moon in Leo Meaning

Leo is a sign that can be at the receiving end of plenty of hate because their confidence and self-acceptance can trigger wounds in those areas for other people. How others feel about them is ultimately none of Leo’s business, they are here to do right by themselves by aligning with their heart and being the purest expression of who they are. This is what this sign is here to teach us, and we are bound to encounter these themes during this Leo new moon. Stepping into a higher level of who we are, and what I mean by that is having the audacity to allow yourself to be just as great as you know you are capable of being, is a major theme of this new moon. And doing so is never going to come without criticisms and put downs by those who want and need for us to keep playing down and acting small. It is our job to put the blinders on and re-center our focus back onto ourselves and our goals, desires, and passions. We get to be a little self-focused when it comes to our own lives, and if we are living from a connected and open heart we don’t need to fear becoming self-absorbed. Leo at its highest expression is self-focused only because it is by doing so that they can benefit the world the most by bringing their highest and most genuine expression of who they are. It's vital that we spend time developing our natural gifts and talents, for our own fulfillment but also for the benefit of the greater community. We can only do so, however, when we stop allowing others to be the authority in our lives and we take back that role ourselves. Leo as “The Ruler” archetype holds both the shadow and light of this sign. In the shadow we become absorbed into our ego and attempt to rule those around us, becoming a metaphorical supernova instead of a life-giving sun. However, the evolved expression of the energy of Leo can be best represented simply by the word “sovereign.”

Leo has a deep desire to give to the world and that is why it’s considered the most generous sign of the zodiac. This sign is more about giving than it is taking, and we must remember that by sharing ourselves with the world we are giving to it in a huge way. This is true no matter what we give to the world, and this Leo moon wants you to really intentionally think about what it is that you are giving and sending out. Can you align your self-expression even more with your most authentic values? Is it possible to become even more of who you want to be? Pluto in Aquarius, sitting opposite of Leo, will be forcing us to confront these questions and realign throughout the next two decades.

Leading Up to Mars-Jupiter Conjunction

Mars and Jupiter are big players in this new moon and this moon sets us up for the Mars Jupiter Conjunction happening on August 14th. This new moon is trine Mars and Jupiter which is bringing lots of energy and opportunities to move forward with goals and take aligned and fortuitous action. We may feel more decisive and we may find clarity on a path, or certain steps, to take. During the Mars-Jupiter Conjunction the planets will be making a square with tough-love, taskmaster Saturn. We may find that there are blocks in our way and our opportunities are limited at that time. As a result, we may want to use this new moon to set things in motion to get ahead start on our goals as this new moon doesn't hold those same limitations.

The Impact of Mercury Retrograde

The new moon in Leo is planting seeds that we will come back to a couple times, the first on the Mars-Jupiter conjunction which will bring an influx of energy during Mercury retrograde, a usually stalled time. The astrology of the next month is implying a start/stop, where we may feel like this new moon and the upcoming weeks bring clarity and a plan of action, though when we attempt to move forward with said plan we find closed doors. This is aligned, we are meant to spend the Mercury RX finding different approaches to our goals. When Mercury re-enters the point in the sky where it is for this new moon, we will pick back up with the plans set in motion by this lunation. Mercury will be back at the same point on September 11 and the retrograde ends on August 28th. The last part of this month could bring a necessary shift so remain open and introspective. Remember, retrogrades are about seeing the same things in a new light.
